Types of Testing

ERG - ElectroRetinaGram

This testing equipment is as important to the health of the retina as the electrocardiogram is to the heart. ERG plays a critical role in determining the health of the retina and can detect early retinal dysfunction. It tells us how much light that comes into the back of the eye makes it to the back of the brain.

This can be used for diagnosing and managing diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma suspects, and macular degeneration

Fundus Photo

Crucial for detecting and monitoring various eye diseases. It provides detailed images of the retina, optic nerve, and macula. It also monitors the health of the arteries and veins in the retina and optic nerve.

Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, glaucoma, and macular degeneration can be monitored with fundus photos. It is an important test to monitor for any progression

Visual Field

Crucial for detecting and monitoring eye conditions and neurological issues that can affect vision. The test maps the extent of a person’s peripheral vision and central vision.

This information is vital for diagnosing and managing eye health and brain disorders. This test can be performed for conditions such as Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Diabetes, Brain Tumors, Multiple Sclerosis, Strokes

OCT - Optical Coherence Tomography

Allows the doctor to provide a noninvasive imaging of the retina, macula and optic nerve in the back of the eye. It gives cross sectional images of the retina and optic nerve that cannot be seen with just photos or dilated exam. It shows the doctor all the layers of the retina similar to how an MRI shows all the layers of the brain.

The newest OCT, the OCT A, can perform angiography, which can detect growth of new blood vessels in the retina that are abnormal. These new vessels are prone to bleeding and loss of vision. It provides high resolution images of the retina and choroidal vasculature without the need for injected dyes. The OCT can be performed for conditions such as Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Diabetes

YAG Laser Capsulotomy

YAG Laser Capsulotomy-laser procedure performed in clinic for two main reasons. First it is a painless laser light that is performed to open the development of capsular sclerosis or cloudiness of the membrane that has been left inside the eye after cataract surgery for the placement of the new intraocular lens. As the membrane hardens up around the new implant it gets hazy and cloudy and is sometimes called a second cataract.

The YAG Laser is performed to open up that membrane in the central portion behind the implant to again provide clearer vision after cataract surgery.

SLT (Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty)

This laser is a painless procedure the doctor can perform in clinic that will open up the drain very effectively to lower the pressure inside the eye for the treatment of open angle glaucoma.

This laser can be done once a year, if needed to help control glaucoma.
